When Goals Become Harmful – Protecting Your Health First

Most patients come to us with goals. Sometimes they’ve set those goals on their own, and other times they’ve been given targets by other providers or programs. While having goals is important, not all goals are healthy or even safe. As your health care team, one of our responsibilities is to ask:

Are the goals you’re chasing truly helping your health—or could they be causing harm?

The Real Goal of Weight Loss

Patients often tell me what number they want to see on the scale. But I remind them: your true goal isn’t just a number. Your real goals are to: Look better, yes—but more importantly, feel good and be healthy.

Create longevity—or, as I like to say, be able to do the things I want forever and a day. If a goal pushes you away from these outcomes, then it isn’t serving you.

The Risk of Chasing the Wrong Number

Sometimes patients get stuck on achieving a “magic weight” that may not be realistic—or healthy—for their body. This can lead to: Loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia): Even if the scale looks good, muscle loss puts you at risk for weakness, frailty, and worse health outcomes.

“Skinny fat” syndrome: A person may look lean by weight or BMI, but actually have very low muscle and high body fat. This increases risk for diabetes, heart disease, and other metabolic problems.

Ignoring warning signs: Problems like reflux, poor nutrition, or medication side effects are sometimes brushed aside just to keep pursuing a number on the scale.

Why This Matters

Muscle mass is the engine that burns calories and protects your health. Without it, your body struggles to maintain strength and independence. In some cases, the healthiest thing you can do is actually gain lean body mass, even if that means the number on the scale goes up temporarily.

This can feel stressful—especially if you’re used to chasing a lower weight. But when we focus on building lean body mass and balancing nutrition, your percent body fat improves, your health stabilizes, and your quality of life increases.

The Danger of Quick Fixes

Unfortunately, not every weight loss approach is designed with your health in mind. Some programs focus on short-term results, even if it means sacrificing muscle, ignoring side effects, or avoiding necessary treatments.

  • As a patient, it’s important to ask:
  • Is this plan protecting my long-term health?
  • Does it help me build strength and resilience?
  • Am I ignoring symptoms that need real attention?
