Gastric Sleeve
What is a Gastric sleeve?
Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), also known as a “Sleeve”, is a popular surgical weight loss tool that has been changing lives for many individuals struggling with obesity. This procedure involves reducing the size of the stomach to aid in weight loss. During the surgery, the stomach is divided using a surgical stapling device, creating a smaller, banana-shaped “sleeve” from the larger stomach. The removed portion of the stomach is no longer functional and is taken out. The stapling device has evolved over the years, with improved technology ensuring secure staple lines and reducing the risk of complications. Since a sleeve gastrectomy results in a smaller stomach, smaller meals are adequate to create fullness resulting in fewer calories consumed.
Dr. Peery's Advice
“Not all patients are suitable candidates for a sleeve. During a surgical consultation, it is crucial to discuss individual health conditions and medical history to determine the most appropriate weight loss tool for each patient. For instance, patients with significant reflux and Barrett’s esophagus may not be ideal candidates for sleeve gastrectomy due to potential complications. It is essential to keep an open mind during the consultation process and work closely with your healthcare provider to explore alternative options that may better suit your needs. Despite these potential challenges, it is important to remember that sleeve gastrectomy remains a valuable tool in the fight against obesity for most patients. “
