Meet Dr. Curtis Peery
Curtis Peery, MD, FACS, FASMBS
Dr. Curtis Peery was born and raised in South Dakota, although his parents are originally from the Texas Panhandle. Even though he was raised in South Dakota, Texas always felt like home, and he was fortunate to spend much of his developing years here. Most of his extended family is still in Texas. After growing up, Dr. Peery attended college and medical school at the University of South Dakota and graduated with honors. He completed general surgery training in Des Moines, IA, and practiced there for several years before moving his family back to South Dakota. While in Des Moines, Dr. Peery was heavily involved with teaching residents and medical students as the Assistant Program Director for the Iowa Methodist General Surgery Program.
In Sioux Falls, SD, he entered practice at Sanford USD Medical Center and was a clinical professor and attending physician for the general surgical residency program. He also served as the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the lead of the robotic steering committee. Dr. Peery left a busy general surgery and bariatric practice in January 2023, to move to Texas and now has joined Dr. Keli McCalman in McKinney.
Dr. Peery has extensive experience in both robotic, general, and bariatric surgery. In 2004, he was the first physician to perform robotic surgery in South Dakota. He has performed thousands of robotic surgeries and is a consultant with Intuitive Surgical and other medical device companies to train and educate surgeons in robotic general and bariatric surgery. Since 2015 he has been considered a total practice robotic surgeon. This means he brings the best equipment to every surgical case to afford his patients the best outcome possible. Within bariatrics, he performs the sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, and SADI-S as primary procedures for weight loss. Dr. Peery also accepts patients who have had surgery elsewhere and are having issues with weight regain or complications of their surgery. Additionally, Dr. Peery accepts general surgery patients and performs surgery for reflux, hernia, colon, gallbladder, appendix, and many other conditions.
Over the years Dr. Peery has had the opportunity to continue advancing the care of surgical patients by leading courses in robotic bariatric and general surgery. As a result, he has trained hundreds of surgeons in the U.S. and around the world. In addition to leading courses, he also performs case observations, speaks, and proctors for Intuitive Surgical. Outside of industry, he is active in the bariatric and robotic communities. Dr. Peery is a co-founder and moderator of the closed Facebook group Robotic Bariatric Collaboration (RBC) which has over 3,000 members. In the spirit of collaboration, he has developed an extensive library of surgical videos which can be found on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/curtispeery.
Dr. Peery has 5 children (Kevin, Sam, Jack, Ceci, and Jo) and 2 grandchildren (Rylee and Hudson). He spends his free time reading, traveling, and watching whatever activity his children are involved in, from sports to dance. In addition, he is an avid motorcycle rider and enjoys hunting.
