Choosing the Right Weight Loss Tool: Why One Size Does Not Fit All

If you’ve spent any time researching weight loss, you’ve probably seen advertisements claiming one treatment is “the best.” One commercial promotes medication. Another highlights endoscopic procedures. Another talks about surgery. It can be overwhelming—and confusing.

The truth is much simpler. There is no single “best” weight loss treatment. There is only the treatment that is best for you.

Understanding Your Options

Today, we have more effective treatments for obesity than ever before. These include:

  • Medical weight loss medications such as GLP-1 and GIP medications (like Zepbound®)
  • Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Gastric Bypass
  • SADI-S and Duodenal Switch

Each of these treatments has advantages, disadvantages, and an important role in helping patients achieve healthier lives. Some people need a less invasive approach. Others have severe obesity, diabetes, reflux, or previous weight loss surgery that makes a more durable surgical option the better choice. The important thing isn’t finding the newest treatment—it’s finding the right treatment.

Why We Created This Comparison

The graphic above compares expected Total Body Weight Loss (%TBWL) using published scientific studies. One thing you’ll notice is that not every treatment has data extending to five or ten years. That’s intentional.

At Inspire Bariatrics, we believe in showing patients what we actually know—not what we hope will happen. When long-term data aren’t yet available, we simply leave those sections blank rather than making assumptions. Medicine should be based on evidence, and we believe patients deserve honest, transparent information.

Weight Loss Is Only Part of the Story

Although the amount of weight someone loses is important, it’s only one piece of the equation. We also consider:

  • Improvement or remission of Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Joint pain and mobility
    Reduction in medications
  • Long-term durability of weight loss
  • Overall quality of life

Just as importantly, different treatments affect acid reflux very differently. Some procedures may worsen reflux symptoms, while others are specifically designed to improve—or even resolve—reflux. For many patients, reflux becomes one of the most important factors in deciding which treatment is the best fit.

That’s why choosing a procedure based solely on the amount of expected weight loss can be a mistake. The best treatment balances weight loss with your overall health, medical history, anatomy, and long-term goals.

Why Having More Than One Option Matters

Imagine walking into a toolbox that contains only a hammer. Suddenly every problem starts looking like a nail. Weight loss treatment shouldn’t work that way.

A physician who understands medical therapy, endoscopic procedures, and bariatric surgery can help you compare the strengths and limitations of each option without trying to fit every patient into the same treatment. For some patients, medication is exactly the right place to start. Others benefit from ESG because they prefer a less invasive, incision-free option.

Many patients achieve the most durable results with sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. Patients with higher BMIs, recurrent weight gain, or more complex metabolic disease may benefit from procedures such as SADI-S. The goal isn’t to perform a particular procedure. The goal is to help you choose the right tool for your unique situation.

Our Philosophy at Inspire Bariatrics

A Personalized Approach: Every patient brings a different story. Different medical conditions. Different goals. Different concerns. That’s why our consultations focus on education—not pressure. We believe patients make the best decisions when they understand all of their options, not just one.

At Inspire Bariatrics, we believe obesity is a chronic disease that deserves individualized, evidence-based care. No single procedure or medication is right for everyone. The best outcomes happen when the treatment matches the patient—not the other way around. That’s why we offer a full spectrum of medical, endoscopic, and surgical weight loss treatments. By understanding the advantages and limitations of each option—including expected weight loss, durability, recovery, potential side effects, and how each treatment affects conditions like acid reflux—we can help you choose a plan that’s tailored to your health, your lifestyle, and your long-term goals.

Whether your journey involves medication, an endoscopic procedure, surgery, or a combination of treatments over time, our commitment is the same: To provide honest guidance, evidence-based recommendations, and personalized care that helps you achieve lasting success—not just for today, but for years to come.

Dr. Peery’s Perspective

“One of the most common questions I hear is, ‘Which procedure is the best?’ My answer is always the same: the best procedure is the one that’s best for you. Every patient is different. Your medical conditions, your weight-loss goals, your anatomy, your history of reflux, and even your lifestyle all matter. My job isn’t to convince you that one treatment is better than another—it’s to help you understand every appropriate option so we can make the best decision together. That’s how we achieve the safest care, the best outcomes, and long-term success.”
